Dear Reader,
The People Who Shape Your Thinking Can Shape Your Destiny
There is a question every serious man must eventually ask: Who is shaping the man I am becoming?
Not who inspires you. Not who has the biggest platform. Not who is popular. Who is shaping you?
Because whether you realize it or not, somebody is.
Every man is being formed by voices, relationships, books, leaders, experiences, and examples. The question is not whether you will be influenced; the question is whether you will discern your influences before they become your architecture.
This is why mentorship matters.
A mentor is not merely someone you admire. A mentor is someone whose wisdom, experience, character, and pattern of life can contribute meaningfully to your development.
And hear this: not everyone ahead of you should lead you.
Someone can be successful and still lack wisdom. Someone can have influence and lack character. Someone can have a platform and lack depth. Someone can be gifted without possessing the maturity required to help you navigate your own journey.
So don't choose mentors merely because you are impressed by their results.
Discern what produced the results.
Many men see the crown but never study the character. They admire the harvest but never examine the roots. They want the influence but never ask what kind of man produced it.
But Scripture gives us a better pattern.
Joshua stayed with Moses. He watched, served, learned, and observed how Moses responded to God, pressure, people, and responsibility. When Joshua eventually led Israel, he was not starting from zero. Years of proximity had already prepared him.
Elisha did the same with Elijah. He did not merely desire Elijah's results; he pursued his pattern. He stayed, watched, served, and learned. Eventually, what he had observed became part of what he could carry.
That is the power of intentional mentorship.
It compresses learning. It exposes blind spots. It transfers wisdom. It shortens unnecessary journeys.
But mentorship is not about becoming someone else.
The goal is formation, not imitation.
Joshua became Joshua. Elisha became Elisha. Timothy became Timothy. They received from those ahead of them without losing the uniqueness of their own assignment.
A healthy mentor does not manufacture a clone. A healthy mentor helps develop what God has already placed inside you.
So how do you discern your mentor?
1. IDENTIFY WHERE YOU NEED GROWTH
Ask yourself: What am I becoming? Leadership? Business? Ministry? Marriage? Spiritual maturity? Your destination helps you recognize the right guide.
2. STUDY THE PERSON BEFORE FOLLOWING THE PERSON
Don't be hypnotized by results. Study character, consistency, values, relationships, and how they handle pressure.
Don't only ask, “What have they achieved?”
Ask, “Who did they become while achieving it?”
3. LOOK FOR PROVEN FRUIT
Jesus said, “Ye shall know them by their fruits.”
Look for wisdom that works, character that has been tested, and results that have endured seasons.
4. LEARN WITHOUT LOSING YOUR IDENTITY
Receive wisdom without surrendering discernment. Learn patterns without becoming a copy. Borrow principles and build your own expression.
5. BECOME A RESPONSIBLE STUDENT
Ask questions. Observe. Take notes. Apply. Receive correction.
Teachability accelerates growth.
6. BECOME WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR
Eventually, the student must become a steward of what he has received. Someone else should eventually be able to drink from the well you have dug.
Hear this…
You don't have to learn everything the hard way.
Someone has already walked the road you are entering. Someone has already made mistakes you can avoid. Someone has already discovered principles you are still searching for.
Don't allow pride to make you unnecessarily expensive to teach. There is nothing noble about making every mistake yourself. And there is nothing weak about saying, “Teach me.”
But don't become a follower of personalities. Become a student of wisdom. Pray. Discern. Study. Then align intentionally.
Because the people who shape your thinking influence your decisions. Your decisions shape your habits. Your habits shape your character. And your character shapes your destiny.
So ask yourself: “If I keep learning from these people for the next ten years, who will I become?”
That question can change your life. Perhaps your next level does not need another motivational speech. Perhaps it needs a wiser relationship. A discerning mentor. A deeper conversation.
Don't just pray for elevation. Pray for discernment. Don't just ask God for opportunities.
Ask Him for the right voices. And when God brings the right people into your path, don't compete. Don't pretend. Don't resist.
Learn.
Because sometimes, the distance between where you are and where you are called to be is measured by what you are willing to learn from someone who has gone ahead of you.
🔥 Declare boldly:
“LORD, GIVE ME DISCERNMENT TO RECOGNIZE THE RIGHT VOICES, HUMILITY TO LEARN, AND WISDOM TO BECOME ALL YOU HAVE CALLED ME TO BE.”
